Greed, Lechery, and Lies through the Lives of Psychopaths and Sociopaths - John Fund and Craig Franklin
In 1980, at the Libertarian Party Convention in San Diego, I met a chubby, soft looking young man from Northern California whose name I remembered as Funk. The next year Funk, actually John Fund, sat next to me at the banquet and held my hand. I wondered briefly if he knew he was doing so. It was a strange moment. Psychopaths, lacking empathy, miss the clues which keep normal people within boundaries.
He was seven or eight years younger than myself. As a relationship it was not going to work, that was obvious. He whined constantly. At first I felt tremendous compassion for him. I had never seen a grown man cry, as he did when I dumped him. In all, I dumped John three times.
John was a user. In 1981 he was hanging around the legislature in Sacramento trying to get a paid job. I had mentioned my brother, Charles A. Pillsbury, who was then working as a legislative assistant while attending law school at Davis and flying for the National Guard. Cap, or Chuck, as the family and friends called him, had recently left the military after six years serving as a Load Master in the Air Force. He had resisted multiple offers for officer training, returning to civilian life after being decorated a number of times.
Cap was not impressed with John. I could tell he was gritting his teeth when he called. Cap told me John introduced himself as my boy friend and asked Cap to get him a job with the legislature. When I learned about this, from Cap, not John, who never asked if he could approach my brother, I was outraged.
Cap finished law school and became a systems analyst for the Office of the Governor, serving there until he suffered a stroke which resulted in aphasia, and several years of hope and disappointment as he failed to improve and his health deteriorated. He died last year on September 15th, the same day my mother died in 1987.
I forgave John after telling him what I thought of him trying to use my brother to get a job. From that point on I had questions about his veracity. Sociopaths lie as easily as they breathe. But they
can also emulate human emotions which they do not actually feel to manipulate their victims.
John apologized abjectly and did everything to get back into my good graces, which he did to a limited degree. Psychopaths use their charisma and tell you exactly what you want to hear, going in.
John had been Executive Director for the Libertarian Party of California and we had many interests in common. We talked politics. He had read everything about politics and so had interesting perspectives. We were, I thought, friends. John claimed to be doing amazing things as Executive Director in Northern California and with campaigns. He was lying. The work he was really doing around 1979, as a political operative for Ed Crane, who went on to found Cato Institute. Fund's work would find synergy with Crane's. At the time it served as a stop gap until his employment as an operative for Bush Group began after Novak placed him at the Wall Street Journal.
His relationship with Libertarianism became useful over time as the raw material used to persuade Americans that fascism was actually freedom.
In 2006 Justin Raimondo, using material provided by Eric Garris, and old friend of mine, wrote an article titled, John Fund vs. The Truth. Within 24 hours I had written my own article in response. Titled, How Libertarians Lost Liberty the article digs into the motives which stopped my old friend Eric when I begged him to help me and Morgan in 2002. I mention this because it serves as a perfect example of how and why psychopaths are not outed when they reach positions of power. The same day I published the article I was talking to Lew Rockwell, who started lewrockwell.com. Lew had just talked to Eric, who is his webmaster for his site. Lew said Eric admitted to him the hope of benefiting was, indeed, his motive.
Soon after I published my article I was contacted by a man who had known John in Sacramento. His letters proved to be a real information resource on the Early John Fund. Raimondo only had part of the story.
Sociopaths get away with it when those watching hope to benefit. Remember that.
In October of 1982 I had allowed myself to be roasted by a large room full of my friends to raise money so debts, including the one owed to John, could be repaid. The event was held at the Braemar Country Club in Tarzana.
John moved to DC. He told me to make ends meet he was also writing the The StarNews. We kept in touch. He sent letters and angled for 'romantic interludes. He called regularly. He asked me to have my kids called him Uncle John. In 1987 I married someone else, Craig Franklin. As it turned out, the two men had more in common than I could have imagined.

John kept writing and calling, asking me what I was doing. I was always into something political. He always wanted the details. Later, I learned he was probably taking notes. What became the Contract on America (Yes, I know they used 'with' but on is more accurate. Did they keep their promises? No, more psychopathic behavior.) My daughter Ayn's boy friend, who worked then at Reason, mentioned they had been told never to share their articles with Fund in advance of publication as Fund would steal them.
The original idea for Contract on America was gleaned from a project I started called at the time The Liberty Pledge. With brochures and a banner I took the idea to the Republican Convention in California in 1992. John asked for a brochures and started reading it immediately. Years later he told Morgan he gave the idea to Newt Gingrich.
In my version there was accountability. I recycled the idea into The Honesty Bond to which I would add the need to demand anyone running for office be tested for psychopathy.
Fund kept in touch all the while as he worked his way up the hierarchy at the Wall Street Journal. Sociopaths feel no affection and have no loyalty. John was simulating a friendship to gain very different ends. If you think Fund is your friend, be warned, he is not.
Uncle John always wanted to know how the kids were doing and took an active interest in their activities. He called to recommend my youngest daughter, Ayn, attend Hillsdale College when, for the same cost she could have attended any of the other schools to which she had gained admittance. These were Mt. Holyoke, Syracuse, and North Eastern, every place she applied, in fact.
What was so special about Hillsdale? Why did John so want Ayn to go there? His seduction of Morgan answered the question for me, only recently. Over and over John asked me to make sure Ayn got in touch with him. Ayn, very shy, did not take up his invitation. Psychopaths love causing pain. Seducing my daughter would, he knew, do just that. He was right.
Additionally, over several years I found out John received a hefty honorarium when he spoke there. As the mother of a student I knew, for a fact, the money was not going towards educating the students. During meetings with her daughter's professors she saw there were no teaching assistants or other aids routine for college. Their fundraising was constant and only big money got respect. No information on funds raised or how it was used have been provided to those of us who believed they were a bastion for freedom.
On Friday, November 19th, 1999, George Roche's daughter-in-law shot herself because George had broken off his illicit relationship with her. Shocking but illuminating. Further enlightenment came when Morgan mentioned several years later John called her, stunned.He had just heard Lisa had killed herself. He said they were, "special friends" and had been, "involved.
I discovered ugly secrets, revolting motives, were common in the swampish world John inhabited.
John had met my oldest daughter, Morgan, at the Viscount Hotel, where the California Libertarian Party was having its annual convention in 1986. He might have met her earlier, but that time I can document, date and time. Nancy Neale, the organizer for the event, was there. Jim Turney, then National LP Chairman, recorded the speakers.
By the mid 90s I had begun to ask questions about many things. It was clear those who called themselves Conservative were nothing of the kind. The word had been hijacked, starting with William F. Buckley, Jr. and Ronald Reagan. It was also clear that the expression "Free Market" had been stolen by those determined to continue the growth of government. Disturbing.
John kept calling to chat. But now he was dropping stories into the conversation that were clearly fiction. Remember Clinton's Black Love Child? Remember the Tattoo on Bill's private parts? It was too much. I listened and took notes. John was largely responsible for the dirty tricks carried out during the Clinton terms. He also boasted he had been responsible for pushing Vince Foster over the edge to suicide.
I thought it was dirty politics, then realized ideology was not an issue. The only goal was money and power. John and his fellow operatives had no ideals, just appetites. Their rhetoric was just words intended to provide spin, justifying policy to keep the confiscation of American wealth going. Sadly for me, it was clear many of my old friends had become involved in those efforts. It paid, and being an activist never did.
Good old fashioned greed, lust, the time dishonored grab for power, were the fires in their bellies.

John Fund is a political operative who worked with and for Karl Rove and the Bushes. He was recruited in 1983, soon after moving to the East Coast to work for Evans and Novak. After Bush finally left office earlier this year they refocused on the next round. Hence ACORN and the other attacks by Fund and his associates. These are intended to stop the growing cooperation between the right and left today. These follow a pattern. They get 'hot' media immediately as they are pushed on the blogosphere through paid spooks and make it to the mainstream. The Swift Boat operation was an example of this. These can seem unrelated to what is then happening but deflect attention from issues which should be given our attention.
Fund once boasted he had been 'briefed' by the White House. I did not take that very seriously until we started going over the documents Morgan kept from Fund's office, which she cleaned up for Fund just days before 9/11, and the materials she kept while cleaning up his apartment in Jersey City. Then we realized Fund was not kidding about his importance to those in power. It was an epiphany. (All files have now been copied and are being held by diverse volunteers across the country.) 
When Fund needed help to avoid embarrassment in 2002, having been charged with domestic violence committed against my daughter, he turned to my former husband for help in addition to his political associates. Craig Franklin was delighted to have the opportunity to rub shoulders with Fund. Others also helped Fund and were compensated in various ways. Libel, threats directed toward us and our friends, were just two of their tools. They also used journalists and found many willing to be compensated for committing libel. Eric Alterman was just the first 'journalist' to decide journalism could pay in more ways than intended by those who were really journalists. Alterman, "adores gossip," and is never limited by the ethical standards of professional journalists.
We started calling it John Fund's Jobs Program for Needy Journalists. Katie Rosman was just one of the grantees. Asking for an exclusive for Elle Magazine, she was them working, she persuaded us to stop talking to other journalists. In the mean time she negotiated her better job with the Wall Street Journal. It was a con job. She exemplifies exactly what is wrong with the media and why Americans no longer know the truth.
In 1996, as I was just beginning to realize how the Libertarian Movement had been converted into opportunities and cover for the corporates employing Bush - Cheney - Rove, and operatives like Fund my own life suddenly demanded my whole attention.
In January, 1997, our family faced a Real Crisis. I discovered the never filed IRS returns my I thought were filed when I married my husband, Craig Franklin, in 1987. It was part of our marriage contract. I had written the check to have the returns made out. Craig just didn't send them. We were bankrupt, close to foreclosure. Looking over the records in the 29 boxes (the returns were in Box 9) I found pay stubs that showed as many as 4 simultaneous garnishments from various taxing authorities.
I took corrective action and got back around a quarter million, using it to pay off our debts. Then things really fell apart. Craig, I asserted, had an emotional disability. Dr. Michael Marquart, a practicing psychologist who saw Craig several times, agree, writing this letter received by the IRS .Sociopaths come with all kinds of strange behavior. At the time I thought Craig was just emotionally challenged over authority figures. I was wrong.
Sociopaths, lacking conscience and empathy are always looking at how they can get what they want. Because I solved the IRS problem Craig was open to new horizons in which to exercise his sociopathic appetites.
Craig filed for divorce without mentioning it to me. He had cut The Deal with Dan O'Dowd. It was a real, "Throw Momma from the Train," moment. I was one of the targets. The other was Dan's partner, Glenn Hightower.
Fund and Franklin, realizing they each had a driving need for cover up, started cooperating.
In October, 1998, at the time Fund started his relationship with Morgan, he and Craig agreed Craig would go back to court to state he, Craig, was the father of my youngest child, who, with the other four, he had adopted in 1989. John confessed to Craig being the child's father. None of the three thought to confide in me since none were speaking to me at the time. If they had I would have told them Craig is the only one who could be the father. My youngest child was conceived through rape, committed by Craig in 1983.
I demanded a DNA test from Craig when I finally found out about their bizarre claims in 2008. Naturally, as a woman, I could not be thought to know anything about who impregnated me.
Craig ignored this opportunity to prove his case, which he would have done if he had not known all along he was lying.
On September 27th, 2009, the twelfth anniversary of Arthur's motorcycle accident, I wrote this letter to Craig and another letter to Dan O'Dowd. Since O'Dowd, whose life ambition is to be just
like Bill Gates, but richer, every few days I will write another letter to Dan, faxed to Green Hills and, for your edification, published here under Letters to Dan.
Suddenly, starting in 2003, the corporation for which Craig was Senior Vice President had lots of government contracts and Dan O'Dowd, its president and owner, was pretending he really was competition for Bill Gates.
Did the government contracts flow because of this really transparent and incompetent PR campaign they named Fallen Heroes Last Wish Foundation, lightly disguised as a 'grant' for the children of dead military? Or was it really another Fund Job Program designed to stop prosecution for domestic violence? You decide. Here is the report on file about what they have spent.
I never received the stock awarded during my divorce. I am no longer asking for the stock. I'm going to use the story to illustrate the what, why, how, and who of corruption in America, caused in large part by psychopaths like John Fund and Craig Franklin. The story will show what is wrong with the court system, how judges like Tom Anderle come out of nothing and become multimillionaires on the bench. How being an attorney like Misho, willing to steal, lie, and, frankly, act like a psychopath, benefited her, allowing her to prosper and grow fat with greed. We will show you how and why psychopaths cooperate, as happened in the case of John Fund and Craig Franklin.
Are Dick Cheney, Karl Rove and others also psychopaths? Ask yourself why the military knows enough about the condition to go looking for them, showing they understand the ugly behavior they can count on, but ignore the ramifications as applied to corporations and to government.
Before we can take back America we need to force the psychopaths out. We outnumber them. Together, we can do it. John Fund and Craig Franklin are flagrant, and therefore easily understandable examples of psychopathy. Their stories will be a real education for all of us.
Let the light of truth shine - demand any one running for office, anyone on the board, an officer, or in upper management for corporations, be tested for psychopathy as a first step towards returning governance to the people and healing our world.
